However, the domestic steel prices have been continuously adjusted upwards by businesses, not stemming from market demand, but primarily due to the rising prices of various input materials for steel production.
Construction steel prices increase according to raw material prices
According to some experts' assessments, steel prices are likely to continue to rise as global prices are still on the upswing, and key materials for steel production such as iron ore, coking coal, scrap steel, hot-rolled coils, etc., have not shown signs of stopping their upward trends.
In the latest report on the steel production and consumption situation in 2022, the Vietnam Steel Association also provided some less optimistic figures. Specifically, finished steel production in 2022 reached 29.339 million tons, a decrease of 11.9% compared to the same period in 2021. Finished steel consumption amounted to 27.3 million tons, down by 7.2% compared to the same period in 2021, with exports reaching 6.28 million tons, a 19.1% decrease compared to the same period the previous year.
Regarding the prospects for the steel industry in 2023, the Vietnam Commodity Exchange (MXV) believes it will still be a challenging year for the domestic steel sector. However, the "pull" from public investment is expected to bring a more positive outlook for the domestic steel industry.
